Brew light special — Whole Foods Market in Rochester Hills will host a beer tasting, featuring Michigan craft beers and local brewers. For two bits, they'll give you a taste of one of 20 beers available. (Attendees must be 21 or older, natch.) It happens 2-5 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at 2918 Walton Blvd., Rochester Hills; 248-371-1400.

Union discount — Midtown Detroit's Union Street is announcing a new menu of $5 small plates after 6 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays. A finster will get you a single dragon egg, a margherita pizza, a petite insalata salad with grilled chicken breast, a crab cake or mac and cheese with wings, as well as $5 martinis and $2 Michigan beers. At 4145 Woodward Ave., Detroit; 313-831-3965.

Serious food — Concerned about food security? A discussion on food systems is planned for next week, covering such subjects as marketing, local foods and using farms to supply produce for school lunches. It takes place 8:30 a.m.-3:15 p.m. Thursday, June 24, at the Jackson Career Center, 6800 Browns Lake Rd., Jackson; $50; register at fsepmichigan.org

FOOD/THOUGHT

For lovers of cake Bev Shaffer's Cakes to Die For! (Pelican Publishing, $26.95) is simply irresistible. There are bundts, cheesecakes, fancy cakes, even one-pan wonders; something for every taste: Gingerbread baby cheesecakes with gingersnap, toasted pecan and, of course, butter and sugar in the crust and a gingerbread filling. With recipes like these, the next time you're invited to a potluck, your cake will make you a star!

BOTTOMS UP

Les Vins Contés Le P'tit Rouquin is a French country wine produced naturally with grapes from 20- to 60-year-old Gamay vines. With a slight chill, a glass of this poundable red radiates enchanting aromas of chalkboard, berry-fruit salad, laughter and cinnamon red-hots. This is one style of wine you want to have standing by to pour for your friends on a late summer evening, as the sun goes orange behind the trees, and the final undertaking of the day is the observation of fireflies.

THE WORKS

Just in time for Father's Day, perfect for a hot summer day, is a set of nostalgic Coca Cola glasses. The contour and shape are reminiscent of the old green Coke bottles, with the name embossed on the side. Swirl Coke and chocolate ice cream in a blender; it's as refreshing as it is yummy. If you don't want the kids or the cops to know you're drinking the hard stuff, fill it with a Hummer. Available at J.C. Penny and other retailers.
