The terms “local TV newscaster” and “renaissance man” are rarely, if ever, found in the same sentence. But Devin Scillian, anchorman at WDIV-TV Channel 4, can be equally comfortable cast in either role. As a newsman he’s covered big stories that have taken him from Iraq to Haiti to Australia. His coverage of the Murrah Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City helped his station there win a Peabody Award. But that’s only one facet of the man.

An accomplished musician and songwriter with a couple of CDs to his credit, he won the Detroit Music Award for best country singer in 2001. And on top of that, the guy also writes children’s books.

Scillian’s personal “Best Of” list is equally diverse. There’s Pewabic Pottery for starters. “Most people have heard of it, but they don’t know that there are ceramic artists there, and a gallery. It is a great place to get a classic Detroit gift for somebody,” he explains.

And then there’s Ford Field: “The place is in a league by itself. It is completely redefining the way football is being watched.”

Also on his list is Taqueria Lupita, a little place on Bagley that serves a chicken torta he says will leave even the most discriminating aficionado of authentic Mexican food more than satisfied.

“It is,” he says, “the perfect lunch.”
