Here’s a first: Proactive is recommending its readers actually turn on their TV sets. Normally we’re inclined to dis all things tubal, but this week is different. Come 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 20, we plan on being glued to our sets so that we can watch Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and challenger Freman Hendrix engage in some verbal sparring in the studios of WXYZ-TV (Channel 7). Chuck Stokes, that station’s much-respected public affairs and editorial director, will moderate. A panel of journalists will hurl questions at the candidates. The hour-long event will be simulcast on radio station WJR (760 on your AM dial).

Wait not —While we avoid the tube, Proactive loves a good protest, which is why we are pimping an action scheduled for noon on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the corner of Woodward and Warren avenues in Detroit. It will be part of what’s hoped to be a nationwide demonstration being coordinated by the group The World Can’t Wait. The group’s Web site (worldcantwait.org) lists plenty of reasons why the Bush regime needs to go. Here are a few:

“Your Government puts people in jail on the merest suspicion, refusing them lawyers, and either holding them indefinitely or deporting them in the dead of night.

“Your Government suppresses the science that doesn’t fit its religious, political and economic agenda, forcing present and future generations to pay a terrible price.

“Your Government is moving to deny women here, and all over the world, the right to birth control and abortion.”
